Sugar intake first increased dramatically during the Industrial Revolution (1750-1900). Alongside this increase, rates of obesity, Type II diabetes, and metabolic disease have increased.

Today, an estimated 47% of all added sugar consumed by Americans comes from sugar-sweetened beverages, and 75% comes from sweetened drinks and snacks.
